There is no question: I support tax relief for our people 100%. Helping Hawaiʻi families afford the cost of living remains a top priority. On May 8, I voted YES on the final version of SB3125, with reservations. A “yes with reservations” is a vote to pass a bill while formally expressing concerns about parts of it. Four Democrats and four Republicans, including me, voted that way. My reservations concerned the bill’s changes to renewable energy tax credits and the uncertainty they created for families and businesses. Representative Nicole Lowen, the Democratic chair of the Energy & Environmental Protection Committee, raised the same concerns (“This means that families and businesses that made financial decisions earlier this year, in January, in February, in March, under the existing law, expecting to receive credits they were promised at the time they made those decisions, may not be able to get those credits. We're changing the rules after the fact, and they will not get what was expected. This is a highly unusual way to make policy.")
